Jannu
(now officially known as Kumbhakarna) lays 11km
to the West of the summit of Mount Kanchenjunga . Though
lower, it is a very difficult peak, with a summit
pyramid that is steep on all sides. The first
ascent and "standard" route is a complex
and difficult, though not extreme, route up the
Southeast Ridge, from the Yamatari Glacier. Neighboring
peak Jannu East, 7468m, was unclimbed as of 1997.
On the climbing side, no experience is necessary,
however you must be familiar with alpine environments
and must understand the risks that camping and
climbing above the snowline pose. Previous Nepal
or Pakistan trekking experience, or long route
hiking experience is desirable. If you have any
doubts, please discuss with us.
